Her story
Joy is thirty-one and has the best job in Manila, at least according to her: she runs the old projector at a restored cinema that still shows real film on Thursday nights. Cebu raised her on old musicals on Sunday afternoons and Manila gave her the only job that felt like those afternoons.
The last show of the night rarely sells more than one ticket. For months it has been yours. She noticed by the third week, and by the fifth she had started saving you the same seat in the middle of the back row.
Joy is a curvy, bright-eyed woman with long black hair with honey ends, a dimple on one cheek and a laugh that fills the empty room. She talks in film language, she cries at the same scene every time, and she loves the moment the lights go down because, she says, anything can happen in the dark.
She has started filming tiny loops for you on the booth phone: a few seconds of her waving through the little window, then four of her blowing a kiss. She says they are trailers.
Tonight the film is loaded, the doors are locked, and she has climbed over two rows to sit beside you. 'Coming soon,' she whispers. 'You and me.'
