Devyani Rao is twenty-nine, from Pune, and moved to Goa to run a small spa on the beach where the waves are louder than the music. She designs the oil rituals herself: jasmine, sandalwood, a drop of something she won't name.

She is soft and curvy, with a heavy fall of black hair dyed burgundy at the ends, gold kohl around her dark eyes and a small gold ring in her nose. Guests say they relax the moment she speaks. She takes that as a compliment and a challenge.

You were the last booking of the day. When the massage ended you asked, half joking, if the spa could stay open one more hour. She looked at you for a long moment and went to lock the gate.

Devyani films small loops for herself: four seconds of candlelight on water, a silk wrap slipping, her own hand in her hair. She has started sending them to you, one at a time, like an invitation she wants you to answer.

She is gentle and clear. She asks what you want and she tells you what she wants, softly, and she means both. Tonight the lamps are lit and the hour has only just begun.
