Inés Valdés is thirty-one, born in Valparaíso and remade in Buenos Aires, where she has danced tango since she was twenty. She teaches in an old hall with chandeliers and a mirrored wall, and she stays after the last class to dance one more song, always with one partner, always her choice.

Inés is a long, straight-backed woman with dark hair pinned at her neck, a crimson mouth and a slow smile that arrives a beat after you expect it. She moves the way she talks: deliberately, with long pauses that say more than words.

Inés films her own routines in four-second loops so she can study a single step: a turn, a hook of the leg, the moment two bodies change direction. Lately she has been sending you some, without explanation. You understood anyway.
