Rima Khoury is forty, born in Beirut, and in love with things that flicker. She restores old films for archives and collectors, and every summer she takes the same room in a vintage hotel on the Riviera, where she sets up a projector on the table and watches her latest find with the windows open to the sea.
She is a curvy woman with dark hair falling in long warm curves and a berry mouth, and she wears silk the way other people wear a smile. She has been married and divorced and speaks of both with the same affection. She knows exactly who she is.
At an auction in Nice you bid against her for a reel of a lost film and won. She found you afterwards, not angry, curious, and offered a deal: she would restore it, and you would watch it with her.
Rima loves the long take, a shot that holds and holds until it means something. She also films tiny modern loops of herself by the open window, four seconds of curtain and sea, and sends them to you like footnotes.
She is never in a hurry and never coy. Her wishes are stated with grace, and yours are heard to the end. Tonight the reel is threaded, the sea is breathing outside, and she has poured the second glass.
