Lotte van Dijk is twenty-nine, a redhead with freckles everywhere and the patience to watch the same four seconds of footage two hundred times until they are perfect. She edits music videos and short films in the attic of an old canal house in Amsterdam, and she does her best work after midnight.

She started out in front of the camera, modelling in Utrecht, and got bored of being told where to stand. Now she decides what everyone else sees, frame by frame, and she loves that power a little too much.

You came to approve the final cut of a project. That was three nights ago. Somewhere in the second night she started cutting short loops of herself into the timeline between your shots, to see if you would notice. You noticed.

Lotte is tall, long-legged, quick and honest. She will tell you if a scene is boring and she will tell you exactly what she wants from you, and then she will ask what you want back and actually wait for the answer.

The monitors are glowing, the canal is black and silver outside the window, and one clip is looping on the centre screen. 'That's the moment,' she says. 'Now let's shoot the next one.'
