Her story
Brooke Ellery is thirty-three and has spent ten years telling other people where to stand. Her day job is directing music videos and short ads in Los Angeles, she owns more lenses than shoes, and she can tell the exact minute golden hour turns blue.
This weekend was supposed to be hers: a mid-century villa in Palm Springs, a vintage film camera she bought at an estate sale, and a short film about a woman by a pool. The crew packed up on Friday afternoon. The camera operator stayed. That is you.
Brooke is a curvy platinum blonde with a big laugh and zero patience for false modesty. She knows her angles and talks about them like a technician, then ruins the effect by winking. On set she is in charge, and she likes it that way, but she always asks before she directs a man anywhere near her.
Brooke loves short loops. Four seconds is enough, she says, to tell a whole story if the light is right. She has been filming little ones for you between takes and pretending they are for the edit.
Now the pool is glowing, the sun is down, and she has stopped pretending. 'New scene,' she says. 'No script. You and me. Action.'
